Is it possible to ride an electric bicycle faster than 25 km/h?
03 August 2023

The bicycle is a simple and environmentally friendly way to get around. But how fast are you allowed to ride an e-bike?

This article will address the regulations regarding the speed of e-bikes and explore ways to ride faster. We will explain how and whether it is possible to reconcile the Road Traffic Regulations (StVO) with e-bike tuning.

1. Speed Limit for E-Bikes

In Germany, there is a maximum speed limit of 25 km/h for e-bikes.

This rule applies regardless of the motor power or the weight of the bicycle. It is important to know that exceeding this speed limit is not legally permitted.

2. Ways to Ride Faster

Although exceeding the speed limit is not allowed, there are still ways to travel faster on an e-bike.

One such option is to have the e-bike "tuned." By modifying the bike’s electronics, a higher speed can be achieved.

There are various ways to replace the motor or manipulate the software. But you must not forget that there are risks involved.

Tuning increases the motor’s power to achieve better acceleration. This means changing different parts of the e-bike. Sometimes, this can also void the warranty.

3. StVO and E-Bike Tuning

The traffic law requires that e-bikes and other bicycles must not exceed the allowed speed.

It is important that you comply with the StVO regulations and do not make modifications to your e-bike that violate these rules.

Illegal tuning of your e-bike can lead to legal consequences. Additionally, tuning an e-bike can have criminal implications and may also jeopardize your insurance coverage.

4. However, there is an exception: Pedelecs that are allowed to go faster

The speed limit for e-bikes in Germany can only be exceeded by using a pedelec (Pedal Electric Cycle).

A pedelec is an e-bike that assists the rider up to a speed of 25 km/h, after which the motor switches off. The same rules apply as for regular bicycles. For example: you must wear a helmet or ride on bike paths.

For fast pedelecs, such as S-pedelecs, which can reach speeds up to 45 km/h, additional regulations apply, such as mandatory insurance and a corresponding driving license.

Important: To convert a regular bicycle into a pedelec, you must have it inspected by professionals to ensure all legal requirements are met.

5. Conclusion

It can be concluded that it is indeed possible to reach speeds over 25 km/h with an electric bicycle. But you must know: if you modify your e-bike, this is not allowed. Because it violates the rules of the StVO, unless it is a pedelec.

Illegal tuning of your e-bike can lead to legal consequences. Therefore, it is important to observe the StVO regulations and ensure safety in road traffic.
